Close-up of water spots
on a glass shower door

Those “white marks” are almost always water spots, which are also referred to as water marks, water stains, lime scale, mineral deposits, etched glass, soap scum and a range of other terms.

Water spots are the visible mineral residue left behind after water has evaporated.  Water is full of naturally occurring, perfectly healthy, microscopic minerals: silica, lime, calcium, etc and most of them are very good attaching themselves to glass, tiles, stainless steel and a range of other materials.

Glass is, in its simplest form, a silica material and when you magnify Different mineral are formed by the minerals in water getting trapped in the microscopic pits and indentations in the glass. Once this process begins the water spots begin to build faster and faster as more non-smooth area is formed.

How long a cleaned surface remains clean depends on several factors:

  • the water quality in your area (bore water has far more minerals than rain water...)
  • whether or not you squeegee or dry the shower after each use
  • how thoroughly the surface was cleaned with JUST LIKE NEW previously
  • how often the surface is exposed to contamination i.e. how often your shower is used, and other cleaning methods used on the surface.

Water spots are formed by the minerals in water getting trapped in the microscopic pits and indentations in the glass.  Once this process begins the water spots begin to build faster and faster as more non-smooth area is formed.

During 2012 we will be introducing JUST LIKE NEW Shower Shield to Australia.  Shower Shield creates an invisible barrier that keeps the natural occurring minerals in our water supply from bonding to the glass.

This depends on three main factors:

  1. The type of surface you are cleaning
  2. How badly the surface has been contaminated
  3. What the surface has been contaminated with.

We would expect someone to be able to clean about three typical glass and tile showers with a domestic pack of JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner.  If the showers have minimal water spots we would expect you to have quite a bit of product left over after cleaning them.  If a shower had an extreme build-up over many years or had been cleaned with a few rather dubious chemicals you might find you could use up quite a lot of product getting the shower back to just-like-new.

There are a few different things that can affect the result:

  1. The key to getting surfaces clean is getting the application pad prepared correctly. Two application pad preparation rules to follow:

    a. The more JUST LIKE NEW you can build up in the application pad the better it works.   Our How to Use instructions say to work 3 tablespoons of JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner into the fibre of the pad before you start.  When you first use the pad some of the paste will be squeezed out the sides of the pad; scoop the paste up and put it back on the pad.  Once the application pad is well impregnated and working well you will only add a small amount of paste now and again as you clean.

    b. If the paste on your application pad is too wet or too dry you will get poor results.

“Too Wet” usually happens if the surface being cleaned was not dry to start with or the user has remoistened the application pad after it was allowed to dry out.

“Too Dry” happens when the pad has been allowed to sit in dry air or the sun or if the surface being cleaned is quite warm.  If this happens, add only a couple of drops of water and work this into the pad.  Store your impregnated application pad in a zip-lock type bag or wrap it in plastic to prevent it from drying out when you’re not using it.

  2. You may not be applying enough pressure when cleaning.  Most people are afraid they will damage their shower glass if they apply any pressure.  JUST LIKE NEW was developed in 2002 (called C-thru Water Spot Remover) and we’ve cleaned a great deal of shower glass over the years and have never found a panel of shower glass we can damage – it just doesn’t happen!  The more pressure you apply the quicker you will get results. A BAD build up of water spots / stains takes effort to remove.

Once you get it clean, keeping it clean with JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner is very, very easy.

  3. Not all glass is created equal.  We’ve come across several instances where, on a shower with two glass panels and a glass door, two of the three pieces of glass will clean much easier than the third piece of glass.

  4. Glass can be damaged by cleaning products/chemicals, including some shower cleaners that are not designed for use on mineral contaminated shower glass. JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner cannot repair chemical damage and glass will continue to look stained.

  5. Lastly, Contact us if you’re not getting the result you were expecting.

HintMake sure you also clean the outside of the shower glass the first time you clean your shower.  We have had a few calls/e-mails from customers who were only getting a 90% result until we suggested they check the other side of the glass - where they also had a much smaller amount of water spots.

Either use the application pad on edge (with paste worked into the very edge of the pad) or put some paste on an old toothbrush or other small brush to scrub these hard to get at edges and nooks.

JUST LIKE NEW is completely safe around painted window frames. Our product contains no harmful acids or chemicals and will not harm paintwork. The caution is intended to stop people from using JUST LIKE NEW for cleaning painted surfaces. Small amounts of accidental contact with the paintwork should be fine.

Hint: JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner is also very good at removing paint overspray from glass.

JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner is most effective when applied with our scratch proof application pads. Remember, not all scrubbing pads are created equal and most pads contain abrasives that will scratch most surfaces.

Many DIY outlets, such as Bunnings Warehouse, stock an almost identical white, non-abrasive pad in their paint section. It is often called “0000 (four zeros) grade Synthetic Steel Wool”. Any other non-abrasive type pad could also be used.

You can apply JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner with a cloth but it is not as effective.

No worries - the white residue is merely dried up JUST LIKE NEW Shower Restorer & Hard Surface Cleaner; simply wash off with fresh water. Most users clean their car windows, chrome, etc with JUST LIKE NEW and then wash the exterior of the car in the usual way to give the entire car a bright, clean look.

JUST LIKE NEW would have to be one of the safest cleaning products on the planet; 99.97% natural, non-toxic and very, very safe. You don’t need to wear gloves or any other safety wear.
